When I was in high school, I had no idea how to actually get ready for college dance programs. I figured, hey—I’m dancing all the time, I’m racking up trophies, I’ve got this. But the truth? I didn’t. Not completely.

I didn’t know how important it was to tell a story with my movement. I didn’t realize that colleges weren’t just looking for the best trickster in the room—but someone who could be taught, who showed up on time, who was versatile, who had presence and professionalism.

I’ll never forget showing up to my first college audition thinking, “I’m good at this.” But when I saw the other dancers? I quickly realized there was a whole other layer I had never trained for. The ones who stood out had confidence, yes—but also clarity in who they were. They knew how to talk to the faculty. They came prepared with a resume and portfolio. Some even had summer intensive experience at the college they were auditioning for.

If I could go back, I’d start by focusing less on tricks and more on telling the story—on becoming a strong artist and a professional student. That’s what colleges are really looking for.
