#77: The Chili Story: Why Practice (Not Perfection) Builds Stage Presence

Chili, Confidence, and Stage Presence: Why Awkward Practice Matters

Last night, I stood in my kitchen staring at a pot of chili—and feeling like I had no business being there. Cooking has always been one of my biggest insecurities. I overthink every step, I’m terrified of undercooking meat, and honestly? I’d rather do almost anything else than figure out what’s for dinner.

At first it was funny. I compared myself to Kevin from The Office, dumping chili everywhere. But underneath the humor was something real: a deep discomfort and insecurity. In fact, there was a time when I convinced myself maybe I had an eating disorder—just because I kept avoiding food prep. I wasn’t lazy. I wasn’t broken. I was just afraid of messing up in the kitchen.

And that’s when it hit me.

The way I feel about cooking is the same way many dancers feel about facial expressions on stage.

The Discomfort Is Real

When a teacher says, “Smile!” or “Show me the story in your face,” dancers freeze. It feels silly. It feels uncomfortable. And that discomfort builds into fear—fear of looking dumb, fear of being judged, fear of getting it wrong.

So they do what I did with cooking: avoid it. They’ll work harder at everything else—technique, tricks, flexibility—while pushing stage presence to the side.

It’s Not Laziness. It’s Fear.

For years, I thought I was too “lazy” to cook. In reality, I was terrified of failing at something that should be simple. Dancers think the same thing: “Maybe I’m just not expressive.” But that’s not true. It’s not laziness and it’s not lack of talent.

It’s fear. And fear can be overcome.

Stage Presence Has a Recipe

Just like chili, stage presence comes with rules and a recipe. There are facial expression “basics” every dancer can learn. At first, following those rules feels forced and awkward—just like my watery pot of chili. But with practice, the recipe starts to work. The seasoning gets better. The confidence grows.

And eventually, it stops feeling awkward and starts feeling natural.

Why Practice Matters

You can’t learn to cook by only reading recipes. You can’t learn stage presence by only hearing feedback. You have to practice. You have to risk messing up. You have to try again, and again, and again, until it starts to feel like second nature.

That’s why I’m so passionate about teaching stage presence. Because I know how painful it is to let fear hold you back. And I also know how joyful it feels to finally break through.

Your Next Step

If your dancer struggles with facial expressions—or if you’re tired of hearing “use your face” from judges without real direction—know this: they don’t have to figure it out alone.

Inside Fame Academy, I give dancers the tools, coaching, and support to finally overcome that awkward stage and unlock confidence in their storytelling.

Final Thought

Cooking still isn’t fun for me (yet). But I’m learning. And your dancer can learn too. Stage presence isn’t something you’re born with—it’s a skill. And once they practice the recipe, they’ll stop dreading it and start owning it.

Be brave. Tell your story. Own your stage. 💛
